See, I've been playing around with gluten-free cooking for years. Not because I had to, initially (though, a few family members did!) but because I was curious. And honestly? Sometimes the naturally gluten-free options just taste better! Especially when it comes to snacks. This recipe isn't about feeling deprived; it's about indulging in flavor and textures that will have you coming back for more. This little gem I'm about to share has saved me from many a midday slump, and I think it's about to become your new favorite too. Ready to get snacking? Let's do it!

Golden Baked Turmeric & Seed Crackers

These crackers are more than just a vessel for dips; they're a powerhouse of flavour and texture, thanks to the turmeric, a mix of seeds, and a touch of honey. Oh, and they're completely gluten-free, which is always a win.

Tips & Tricks for Cracker Perfection:

  • Spice it Up: Feel free to get creative with your spices. A pinch of cumin, smoked paprika, or even a little chili powder can add a delicious kick.
  • Seed Variety: The sky's the limit when it comes to seeds. Experiment with different combinations to find your perfect blend!
  • Sweetness Boost: You can adjust sweetness by swapping out honey or maple syrup for 1 tsp of sugar.
  • Herbaceous Heaven: Add some dried herbs, like rosemary, thyme, or oregano for an extra layer of flavor, especially if you're planning to pair these with cheese or charcuterie.
  • Garlic Galore: Add 1/2 tsp garlic powder to the mixture.
  • Dipping Delights: These crackers are fantastic on their own but even better with hummus, guacamole, or your favorite dip. Try with whipped feta – yum!
  • Vegan It!: Substitute the honey with agave or maple syrup for a vegan option.
  • Thin & Crispy vs Thick & Chewy: For thinner, crispier crackers, roll out the dough thinner before baking. For chewier crackers roll it out a bit thicker.

Title: Golden Baked Turmeric & Seed Crackers (Gluten-Free)

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 15-20 minutes

Total Time: 30-35 minutes

Yields: About 18-24 Crackers

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Gluten-Free Oat Flour (make sure it's certified GF if you need to be strict)
  • ½ cup Almond Flour (Adds a lovely nutty flavor)
  • ¼ cup Mixed Seeds (I use a combination of sunflower, pumpkin, and sesame, but any mix, including flax, will be great.)
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • ¼ tsp Black Pepper (freshly ground is best for flavour!)
  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • ¼ cup Warm Water (slightly warm helps things combine)
  • 1 Tbsp Honey or Maple syrup

Instructions:

  1. Get Ready to Rumble (the Mixture, that is): In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the oat flour, almond flour, mixed seeds, turmeric powder, salt, and black pepper. The aroma of the spices alone is enough to make me happy!
  2. Wet Ingredients Join the Party: Add the olive oil, warm water, and honey to the dry ingredients. Stir with a spoon or spatula until a dough starts to form. It may be a bit sticky at first, but don't worry, it will come together. If the dough appears too dry add warm water 1 tbsp at a time until the dough forms. Tip: If your dough becomes too wet, add a tablespoon more of oat or almond flour until it becomes manageable. It's like Goldilocks and the three bears… it needs to be just right
  3. Dough Time (Not That Kind): On a sheet of parchment paper, place the dough. Place a second sheet of parchment paper on top. With a rolling pin or your hands gently spread the dough out until it is between 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch thick. We want this uniform so the crackers bake evenly. A metal baking sheet can be used underneath the parchment paper for easier handling in the oven.
  4. Crack It Up: Remove the top parchment paper. Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, score the dough into the desired cracker shapes. They don't have to be perfect; rustic is the way to go! But try to keep the size consistent that they will bake evenly. You could also use a cookie cutter for fun shapes!
  5. Oven Time: Carefully transfer the parchment paper with the scored cracker dough onto a baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 325°F (160°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the crackers are set. The baking time can vary so check in at the 15 minute mark. Baking paper makes this so much easier! The smell alone is worth waiting for.
  6. Cooling Crucial: Once they're golden goodness, remove them from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes. Then carefully transfer the crackers to a wire rack to cool completely. This will make them extra crispy. Trust me, patience at this stage is key!
  7. Crunch Time: Once cool they can be broken along the scored lines or gently broken into free form crackers which is my preferred method. Store them in an airtight container for up to a week (though they'll probably disappear faster!).

Product Recommendations:

  • A good rolling pin is essential for forming an even thickness. I love my wooden rolling pin and find its heft helps make the job easy. It's one of my most used kitchen tools.
  • Using a silicone baking mat helps food to not stick and is easy to clean!
  • And a good sharp knife will be perfect for slicing into the dough before baking.

There you have it! A simple, satisfying, and good-for-you snack recipe that proves gluten-free can absolutely be delicious! Don't hesitate to experiment with the recipe to make it your own. Let me know how it goes! I'm always excited to hear about your kitchen creations and if this recipe becomes a favorite in your house as well! Happy snacking!
